25.04.2012. Open Technologies, Russian system integrator, informs about completed modernization of URAN, supercomputer in Mathematic and Mechanics Institute at Ural Department of the Russian Academy of Science. The peak productivity of supercomputer was raised to 160 TFlops, and productivity Linpack was increased up to 75.20 TFlops, which made it the 5th most powerful supercomputer in the CIS.

Supercomputer URAN was created in 2009 to provide the institutes of Ural Department of the Russian Academy of Science, other universities and industrial enterprises of the Urals with modern computing resources. The peak productivity of the cluster was 3 TFlops, and the real one was 2.36 TFlops. The designers used blade-server platform HP BladeSystem with 7000 and 32 dual processor HP Proliant BL 460c site based on quad-cor microprocessors like Intel Xeon 5450 with the clock speed of 3.0 GHz.

From the moment of its creation the supercomputer was actively used for scientific and practical tasks. The average load of work in 24x7 mode including weekends was 70%.

The system was actively used by staff of dozens of organizations:

  • The Institute of Mathematics and Mechanic at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science,
  • The Institute of Metals Physics at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science ,
  • The Institute of Heat Physics at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science
  • The Institute of Machine Studies at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science
  • The Institute of Solids Chemistry at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science
  • The Institute of High-Temperature Electrochemistry at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science
  • The Institute of Flow Mechanics at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science
  • The Institute of Applied Mechanics at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science
  • Urals Federal University,
  • Udmurt State University

The objectives solved by supercomputer included research of the best control algorithms for SOYUZ-2 rocket carrier, modeling ракетным носителем класса «СОЮЗ-2», modeling Earth deep dynamics, structural analysis of the Earth surface space shot, mathematic model of heart, modeling gas hydrodynamic processes in engines..

In 2011 the average load of URAN supercomputer grew up tom 80%. More tasks were waiting in line. It became evident that the existing computing power was insufficient. That is why a decision was taken to modernize URAN.

New calculation filed of the supercomputer was built on the basis of hybrid architecture with NVIDIA general graphics processor applied. Their peak productivity was several times higher while their cost and power consumption was lower.

The contest for creation of hybrid architecture computing filed was won by Open Technologies. .

The system integrator and the specialists of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanic at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science designed a solution providing for maximal density of equipment location. The existing supercomputer equipment was totally compatible with the new one, which allowed preserving the invested capital.

The supercomputer was extended via HP ProLiant s6500 platform with HP Proliant SL390s G7 servers. Each of the servers had 8 GPU NVIDIA Tesla.

As a result the peak productivity of URAN rose to 160 TFlops, and the productivity in Linpack increased up to 75.20 TFlops.

According to Andrey Sozykin, the head of supercomputer technologies section at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanic at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science, "the supercomputer of hybrid architecture with graphic processors was demanded by our users due to numerous ready packages (including free ones) for parallel GOU calculation".

The Institute of Mathematics and Mechanic at the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science is the leader in developing computing, information and telecommunication resources for fundamental and applied researches in the scientific establishments of the Urals Department of the Russian Academy of Science and other universities of the region.
